Bullying Prevention

  • 19 percent of Colorado high school students reported that they had been bullied on school property during the last 12 months. Source
  • 88 percent of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) students in Colorado middle and high schools regularly heard homophobic remarks from other students in school. Source
  • 32 percent of Colorado high school students were in a physical fight one or more times during the past 12 months. Source
  • 11 percent of Colorado high school students were in a physical fight on school property one or more times during the past 12 months. Source
  • 57 percent of LGBTQ students who were harassed or assaulted in Colorado’s middle and high schools never reported it to school staff. Source
  • 8 percent of Colorado high school students reported that they had been threatened or injured with a weapon such as a gun, knife or club on school property one or more times during the past 12 months. Source
  • The national suicide rate for LGBTQ students continues to be three to four times higher than that of their straight counterparts in part due to bullying and harassment. Source
  • 5 percent of Colorado high school students did not go to school because they felt unsafe at school or on their way to or from school on at least one day. Source
  • Nearly 33 percent of selected Colorado schools with lower levels of bullying that participated in an independent evaluation reported higher CSAP scores, while only 14 percent of selected schools with higher levels of bullying showed above average CSAP scores. Source
  • Key factors such as positive relationships among adults and youths at school, and a school culture of trust and fairness in select Colorado schools had a direct impact on reducing bullying. Source
