School of One
School of One
“Organizing an entire school around the needs of every one student.”
School of One is a pioneer in the emerging field of customized learning. It redesigns the classroom to integrate multiple “modalities” of instruction – live teacher-led lessons, software-based lessons, collaborative activities, virtual tutors, and individual practice – into the same learning space. This design allows School of One to effectively differentiate instruction based on each student’s unique needs and learning styles. Their first major engagement has been a full-time math program in three New York City public middle schools. Learn more at: http://schoolofone.org/.

School of One’s pioneering learning algorithm generates personalized learning paths (including type of instruction and difficulty of content) for each student based on their current level of knowledge and preferred learning styles.
School of One learns about the specific academic needs of every student through daily online quizzes that generate instant progress reports for students, parents, and teachers.
This data determines the content students see in subsequent lessons, allows for evaluation of curricular materials, and helps guide a daily scheduling algorithm.
Daily learning plans for each student are drawn from more than 5,000 lessons from over 50 live and digital content providers every day, which are categorized by method of instruction and by academic content, in order to find the best matches among students, teachers, and resources.
Modalities include large group instruction, small group instruction, small group collaboration, live remote tutoring, virtual instruction, and independent practice.
Students learn at their own pace, and when they do not master a skill using one form of instruction, the algorithm figures out a new way to teach the student that specific skill.
