Kunskapsskolan Education
“Where students, through personalized learning and clear goals, will stretch their boundaries and learn more than they thought possible.”
Kunskapsskolan’s goal is to establish, operate and develop schools where every student is recognized as a unique individual with the ability, ambition and support to learn and grow beyond what she or he thought was possible. Their structured model for personalized learning — the KED (Kunskapsskolan Education) program—utilizes technology to create an individualized and personalized learning environment. The KED program is operated in Kunskapsskolan’s 34 schools in Sweden, in the Learning Schools Trust’s 3 schools in the United Kingdom and in the Innovate Manhattan School in New York City, USA. Students, with guidance from their coach, set and work towards their own personal goals, based on previous educational experiences as well as their individual strengths and weaknesses.
Resources in the form of time, facilities, curriculum, and learning materials are organized to support meeting these goals.
Through the Educational Documentation System (EDS) on the Learning Portal, the teacher – as well as families – get real time insight into how learning is progressing to determine what level a student will start on and what strategies are needed to reach long-term goals.
All subjects in KED Schools are organized as step courses or thematic courses, where students can progress from lesson to lesson at their own pace.
The Learning Portal also serves as a knowledge management system, where teachers can find presentations and lectures to suit their students’ needs.
Every student has a personal and tailored schedule, depending on their knowledge, goals, and best way of learning. Each week, students enter all goals, schedule and action list in their logbook, and take responsibility for the way they spend their time.
Rather than a traditional comprehensive teacher role, which emphasizes a single teacher delivering knowledge to a classroom of students, a teacher’s role in the KED program consists of four parts: being a personal coach, a general coach, a subject expert, and a team member.
Learning takes place in various forums: workshops, seminars, communication sessions, lectures, and virtual learning.
