Angela Baber is the Director of Educator Effectiveness at the Colorado Legacy Foundation. In this role, Angela works in collaboration with the Colorado Department of Education, the Colorado Department of Higher Education, the Governor’s Office and many other state organizations to develop and implement effective educator policies and programs and identify and scale best practices in educator effectiveness across the state. Current work includes implementation of SB 10-191 (the Educator Effectiveness law); staffing of the State Council for Educator Effectiveness to review and make policy recommendations based on the implementation of SB 10-191; and work with teachers across the state to articulate a strategy of teacher leadership for Colorado.

Angela joined the Colorado Legacy Foundation from the DC-based National Governors Association (NGA) where she worked with governors and their key policy staff to develop innovative policy solutions to some of today’s most pressing public policy issues. Specifically, she led the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) work within the organization and managed a multi-million dollar cross-state, multi-phase initiative to increase the college and workforce readiness of students and adults to ultimately decrease inequities in education and opportunity and aid state economic growth.

Prior to joining NGA, Angela served as a researcher for the Education Commission of the States where she gained a depth and breadth of knowledge regarding educator effectiveness research and policies across the fifty states. She also managed a National Science Foundation-funded STEM teacher preparation program at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Angela’s professional experience is grounded in technical expertise through her degree in Astrophysics from CU-Boulder.

If you could have dinner with two people, one dead and one living, who would they be? Why?

Einstein and Angelina Jolie. Einstein is my absolute number #1 hero. I love that he didn’t make the cut at Brown, but has rocked our understanding of the world, universe and galaxy and fundamentally changed the way we approach science more than any other person. Ever. Angelina Jolie does not need to care about the world. She is gorgeous, famous and rich. But she demonstrates that she cares deeply about the injustices of the world and is making cultural shifts through leading by example to address injustice.

What would you do if you didn’t have to work? I would sail around the world. Then – after about six months of wind, sun and surf – I would dedicate my time to improving education for all children and adults everywhere.
