Colorado Legacy Foundation’s 5th Annual Legacy Luncheon
Colorado Legacy Foundation’s 5th Annual “Legacy Luncheon” celebrated excellence and innovation in public schools.
The Colorado Legacy Foundation (CLF)’s 5th Annual Legacy Luncheon, held on April 17th, 2013 at the Sheraton Denver Downtown, was our largest yet! We were thrilled to have close to 1,000 educators, policy makers, foundations, and businesses from across Colorado celebrate the individuals and organizations that represent the values that guide our work. The Legacy Luncheon is among the highest profile education events in Colorado and is an opportunity to celebrate the Colorado Legacy Foundation’s work in innovation in public schools.
The luncheon was hosted by TaRhonda Thomas of 9NEWS and featured a special video welcome from U.S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan. We had a special performance by Celebrate the Beat, a not-for-profit Colorado based organization teaching inspirational music and dance classes that help children discover their potential by motivating them to believe in themselves, value artistic expression, and develop a personal standard of excellence. We also honored three 2013 Legacy Award Winners:
- Evan Wettengal, 2nd grade teacher at Godsman Elementary School in Denver Public Schools as this year’s Ignite Innovation Challenge Winner.
- Amanda Westenberg, High School Social Studies Teacher at Rangeview High School, as the 2013 Colorado Teacher of the Year.
- Sam Gary, Founder of The Piton Foundation and Principal of Gary Community Investment Company, for his decades-long and immeasurable contributions to education in Colorado.

The luncheon concluded with a keynote speech by Dr. Ezekiel “Zeke” Emanuel, senior fellow at the Center for American Progress and a nationally-recognized leading expert on innovative health care. Dr. Emanuel has published widely on the ethics of clinical research, health care reform, international research ethics, end of life care issues, euthanasia, the ethics of managed care, and the physician-patient relationship.
Thank you to the many organizations, corporations, and individuals who made this event possible.
