2013 Healthy Schools & Integration Summit
The Colorado Legacy Foundation hosted the 2013 Healthy Schools and Integration Summit on April 17th, which brought together educational leaders and stakeholders throughout the state to learn, promote, and celebrate advancing academic achievement efforts. The event was held from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm at the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel at 1550 Court Place, Denver.
The day started with an energetic breakfast keynote from 2011 MacArthur Fellow, Award-Winning Harvard Economist, Education Activist, and collaborator on the Bestselling book Freakonomics, Dr. Roland Fryer.
We also recognized this year’s Healthy School Champions. These thirty-four schools have developed innovative and engaging ways to make health and wellness a priority in their schools and communities, and they show us all what is made possible by working together to put kids first. This year’s event expanded on the success of the Healthy School Champions Score Card, a voluntary program to assess and recognize best practices in schools adopting and implementing a coordinated approach to health and wellness strategies and again allowed us to celebrate April as Healthy Schools Month!
The Summit comprised sixteen workshop sessions, within which local and national Health and Wellness experts and the implementers of The Colorado Integration Project provided best practices and tangible tools for advancing the professional growth of educators and academic achievement for all students.

The summit closed with plenary speaker Dayle Hayes, MS, RD, an award-winning author and educator. As a parent and member of the School Nutrition Association, Dayle is dedicated to making school environments healthy for students and staff. Dayle has served on the ADA Board of Directors where she chaired the Public Initiative Team and Technology Task Force. She also is a past president of the Montana Dietetic Association and Past-Chair of the School Nutrition Services Dietetic Practice Group.
The Healthy Schools and Integration Summit was generously sponsored by the Colorado Health Foundation and the Gates Foundation.
